CYIS and JEF Finland have submitted a Joint Open a letter to Commissioner Didier Reynders on the Right to Repair.
In March 2020, the European Commission’s Circular Economy Action Plan promised a “new Right to Repair” and measures to ensure that sustainable products, services and business models become the norm.
While this commitment was more than welcome by young European citizens and consumers, initial Right to Repair measures for products have fallen short which has negatively affected young people across dimensions. Not only are consumer rights restricted by the high cost of repair, limited access to spare parts and regulating software, they further negatively impact the environment with annual CO2 emission and electronic waste. Giving consumers the opportunity and means to repair their products would help in drawing attention to the 2050 climate targets.
As the next generation of decision-makers, we believe that all young Europeans should have the right to repair products which can be easily disassembled and other parts easily replaced. All spare parts should be affordably available to consumers as well as repair professionals. Manufacturers must commit to providing repair information and long-term software and security updates.
